Why vinyl plank suits Wood Buffalo homes
Most vinyl plank floors are water-resistant at the surface, comfortable underfoot, and tolerant of the grit and gravel that come inside on boots from October to April. For landlords, damaged sections can often be repaired without redoing the whole room, which keeps future turnovers simpler.
Rigid-core products also cope well with a basement or a home that is closed up for part of the year, as long as the manufacturer's temperature range is respected.
What happens before the first plank
A floating vinyl floor is only as flat as the surface under it. We check the subfloor for dips, humps and squeaks and deal with them before installation, because they show up later as gaps, clicking or broken locking joints.
Planks are acclimated according to the manufacturer's instructions, which matters in winter when boxes have been sitting in a cold vehicle or garage. Door casings are undercut so the floor slides beneath them for a clean edge, and an expansion gap is left at the walls for the baseboards to cover.
Baseboards, transitions and the finished look
The edges are what people notice. New flooring usually means baseboards come off and go back on, or get replaced if they are damaged or dated. Transitions to tile, carpet or an existing floor are fitted so they sit flat and don't catch toes.
Because PropFlo also does trim and painting, baseboards can be installed, caulked and painted as part of the same project instead of waiting on another trade.
Flooring for rentals and turnovers
Replacing worn carpet with vinyl plank between tenants is a common upgrade for Fort McMurray landlords. It is easier to clean, holds up to move-ins and move-outs, and photographs well for listings. What should I tell you about the flooring?
The product name or a photo of the box, the rooms and approximate square footage, what is on the floor now, and whether the baseboards are staying or being replaced. If you have not chosen a product yet, say so in your request.
Can vinyl plank go in a basement?
Usually, yes. Many vinyl plank products are rated for installation over concrete with the right underlayment or vapour barrier. Check the manufacturer's requirements, and we will look at the slab and any moisture concerns before going ahead.
Do you install baseboards after the floor?
Yes. Baseboards and door trim are part of how we finish a flooring job, and we can replace them if the old ones are damaged or no longer suit the room.
How long should vinyl plank acclimate?
Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the box. Many products call for the planks to sit in the heated room for a set time before installation, which is especially important in a Fort McMurray winter.
