Why Fort McMurray walls crack

Seasonal swings are hard on drywall. A long, dry heating season shrinks framing lumber slightly, and the change back in spring and summer can open hairline cracks at the corners of doors and windows, along taped seams, and where walls meet ceilings.

Newer homes, including the many rebuilt in Abasand, Beacon Hill and Waterways after the 2016 wildfire, can show nail pops in their first few seasons as framing settles. Most of this is cosmetic and straightforward to fix. A crack that keeps growing, or doors that suddenly stop closing, is worth a closer look.

How a lasting patch is done

Small holes are filled and sanded. Larger holes get a properly backed patch rather than a mesh sticker that can show through paint. Cracks are taped and feathered wide so the repair blends into the surrounding wall, and nail pops are reset with a screw before they are filled.

Each repair is primed before paint, because bare joint compound absorbs paint differently and can show as a dull patch even when the colour is right.

Matching texture and paint

Many local homes have textured ceilings or walls. We blend texture as closely as practical, and we will be straight with you when an exact match is unlikely, for example on an older ceiling texture.

For paint, a full wall from corner to corner hides a repair far better than a dab of touch-up, especially if the original paint has aged or the exact colour is unknown.

Water damage: fix the source first

If drywall is stained, soft or bubbling, the source has to be fixed before the wall is repaired, whether that is a leaking supply line, a shower surround or ice damming on the roof. Once the area is dry, damaged board can be cut out and replaced. If there is a lot of moisture or visible mould, a remediation specialist may be the right first call, and we will tell you if we think so.

Drywall repair questions

Before you
send the list.

Can you repair a hole from a doorknob?

Yes. It is one of the most common drywall repairs. Adding a door stop afterwards keeps it from happening again.

Will I see the patch after it is painted?

A well-feathered, primed patch with the full wall repainted is usually very hard to spot. Spot touch-ups on older paint are more likely to show, so we will recommend the approach that suits the wall.

Do you fix ceiling cracks and nail pops?

Yes. Ceilings are repaired the same way as walls, with extra attention to blending the texture.

Can drywall repair be part of a rental turnover?

Yes. Patching anchor holes, dents and damaged corners normally happens right before a unit is painted, as part of the make-ready sequence.
